Annabhishekam at Manakkal

DSC00739

” Annanaam Pathaye Namo…” thus goes the Rudram, hailing Lord Parameswara as the sole & Supreme Power who grants even the basic needs of the Universe such as food. Based on the Vedic proclamation, we conduct Annabhishekam in the Tamil month of Aipasi ( Oct- Nov) by offering cooked rice to The Lord at all Shiva Temples on the Full moon Day (Powrnami) . It was on 6th November, the function was conducted this year.

Freshly cooked rice is poured over the Shiva Linga as Abhishekam. This is done on daily basis in Chidambaram Nataraja Temple to Chandramouleeswara. Offering cooked rice is considered very auspicious during the month of Aipasi as each piece of the cooked rice is treated as a Lingam and to have dharshan on this day is said to bring prosperity.

It will be a magnanimous dharshan to witness this event at places like Thanjavur Brahadeeswara Temple and Gangaikonda Cholapuram where the Siva Linga is huge. At Gangai Konda Cholapuram one can see the offering made right from 9 am on this day. Since the Linaga Murthi is tall, it will take several hours to complete the abhishekam. Devotees will be thrilled to see the Lord getting covered fully in cooked rice. It is then followed by alankaram with flowers. In many places, vegetables are also offered with the prayers in the lips for rich harvest in the following years as well.

There are places in the rural areas where the locals are either not aware of the significance of the event or unable to conduct it for lack of resources. It is for such Temples, Ardhra Foundation comes forward to conduct the abhishekam with the involvement of the local people. It was planned to do it this year at Manakkal near Thiruvarur. Sri Agastheeswara Temple and Sri Seshapureeswara Swami Temple are the two old Temples of this place where this event had to be conducted.

It also happened to be the Gurupuja Day of Saint Thirumular , the author of 10th Thirumurai, Thirumandiram. Hence the Foundation members went straight to Thiruvavaduthurai where the saint delivered 3000 Hymns . The Temple wore a festive look as many devotees had arrived from various parts of the state.

We moved to Sathanur, about 3 km from Thiruvavaduthurai  where the Sidha from Kailash entered into the dead body of Mulan who died because of snake bite. On becoming Thirumular the Sage proceeded to Thiruvavaduthurai and and sang the verses. Devotees have constructed a Temple exclusively for Thirumular few years back. They observe the Gurupuja Day on Aipasi Aswathi by conducting Homam and Abhishekam for Thirumular. We considered ourselves fortunate to participate in the function.

We had to rush to Manakkal to start preparing for Annabhishekam. It was already 4 pm and we started cooking rice without losing time further. But we were worried whether we would be able to prepare cooked ice for both Temples on time. It was at this stage the miracle happened. A huge vessel full of cooked rice arrived and offered to us to be used for abhishekam. We came to know that a devotee had arranged cooked rice for some Temples of this region and the volunteers had distributed the same to places where the event was conducted. We were speechless on the arrival of hot rice, cooked at a nearby Temple. We started annabishekam to the Murthi by chanting Sri  Rudram and Thevaram verses. Both Agastheeswara and Sowndhara Nayaki were richly decorated with new vastrams and garlands. Similarly, the abhishekam was conducted at Seshapureeswara Swami Temple nearby. We considered it as a great blessing showered on us and the participation of locals was encouraging.

Save Temples from destruction

DSC01275 DSC01273

The Cauvery delta seems to have too many Temples in dilapidated state. The present condition is the outcome of  not less than a century year old neglect. The structures would not have suffered to this extent had the locals paid enough attention at appropriate time. It is quite common that the growth of plants take place more during the  monsoon. The newly formed plants, held between the stones and nourished by the monsoon are either not noticed or left unattended as there is no accountability for the maintenance of the structures. Even the presence of few service oriented guys in a village could have made the difference and saved them from destruction.

Removal of the “”python like “roots from the Vimanams, Gopurams and Mandapams has become a big challenge now. The thick roots can be removed only when the old structure is removed stone by stone. Reassembling these numbered stones is also a tough job which is normally carried out by using cranes. Thus it requires huge amount of money to do the entire job. That’s not enough. The gaps created by reassembling the stones must be plugged well to avoid the repetition of the old story.

There are many places where there are no signs of the old sannadhi built in the past. In such places, we need to build a new one as part of the Temple. But we can still save the existing sannadhis however bad the condition is. Temples constructed out of bricks and lime are the worst affected as the roots penetrate deeply and cause extensive damage.

As the situation demands immediate action, we appeal through these columns to act swiftly and save as many old Temples as we can. Though it is a welcome change that many people identify the Temples that are neglected and call for renovation, very few of them involve themselves to do the ground work. Those who are supposed to indulge more are interested in doing other activities that will fetch them money and fame.

When the Temple at Peravur was visited some two years back, the need for renovation was felt as the shine was facing a situation of now or never. The Ambal sannadhi had gone probably a century ago and the only sannadhi of Adhitheswara was under threat. The locals also shouldered the responsibilty and came forward to renovate the Vimanam of the Sanctum. We built a new sannadhi for Ambal and the consecration was held on 9th April,2014. The Temple now presents a new look but the old face was left untouched. Thevaram Hymns related to this place were inscribed on a Tablet and fixed at the mahamandapam.

Not far away from Peravur is a place called Karuppur where another dilapidated Temple was identified for immediate renovation. Among the idols, only the Linga Murthi is there. All other idols are lost and a heap of sand where the Ambal sannadhi was once present is no longer there! The Sanctum has a good vimanam over it but the walls that hold the vimanam are threatened by many trees which are deep rooted. So the entire structure is beyond repair. The walls made of bricks and lime are almost crumbled and wait for the inevitable to happen. Hence it has become necessary to rebuild the whole structure to house the moola moothi back. Bala sthapanam ceremony was held recently to pave way for the construction work. The Temple complex was levelled and the work will start on 13th April.

Another Temple at Enangudi near Nannilam was visited where the locals showed interest in retaining the Temple. Work on Swami Vimanam was in progress and all that they wanted was to speed up the work with external help. We assured all cooperation and the work on  vimanams of other sannadhis were started next week and we expect it to be over by next week. The consecration is planned for June 2014. The roof and outer walls are to be repaired before that and the villagers look for help from philanthropists.

As assured by us, a new sannadhi was constructed for Subamanya within a month at Korkai, near Kumbakonam. The locals are engaged in building a sannadhi for Vinayaka in the outer prakaram and the only work remaining would be the construction of a compound wall around the Temple complex.

The fact emains that even affordable people do not come forward to take up the Holy task of restoring our Heritage structures. Those who earn in lakhs and crores seldom think about this! Amazing wealth seems to be the way of life for them. Regardless of the amout of wealth we possess , it is commonly forgotton that the real master of all wealth on earth is The Almighty and we are blessed to enjoy whatever is given by Him. At the same time we should not forget to pay back to Him and the Society and the failure of which will lead us to Hell. This is how Saint Appar has warned us in his Hymn on Thiruvaiyaru:

“இரப்பவர்க்கு ஈய வைத்தார் ஈபவர்க்கு அருளும் வைத்தார்

கரப்பவர் தங்கட்கு எல்லாம் கடு நரகங்கள் வைத்தார்…”

Undesirable Shift in Tradition

6A

Lord Shiva had blessed Sivagamas, 28 in number which remain as treatise not only on building and maintaining the Temples but also comprehensively on all rituals such as nithya puja, brahmothsavam , aathmapuja, dhyanam, Sivadheeksha etc. Of the available Agamas, the Temples follow whichever was under practice in the past. The Sivacharya sect , a dedicated group of Archakas in Tamilnadu had been doing selfless service over many centuries under the sponsorship of the rulers. Once the monarchy became extinct, the responsibility was taken over by the State Government and the Trustees of Private Temples. Then came the difficult days for the priests as the lands belonged to the Temples were not generating funds to pay salary for them and also to maintain the shrines. Since the Govt kept a blind eye for more than five decades, the situation got deteriorated leading to the migration of priests from rural areas. It became bad to worse as the Sivacharyars reeling under poverty hesitate to put their sons in Temple duties. Hence a deep crisis has formed due to the non- availability of priests for Temples that do not have enough income.

As the livelihood is under threat, the boys opt for other professions that can fetch them assured income. Since the girls also follow suit, young boys who have studied in Agama patasala and follow the footprints of their ancestors fail to get life partners within a reasonable time. If this trend continues for few more years, there is every reason to assume that except the few prosperous Temples, the ritual will face very severe shortage of Sivacharyars.

Now it is time to stop the undesirable shift in our tradition. There may be many options to put a stop to this trend but some practical solution has to be put into force without further delay.

Ardhra Foundation has come forward with what it thinks a”workable solution”. Under this scheme, computer related jobs will be offered with good salary , PF and medical insurance for boys who have completed + 2 at school. The only requirement is that the boy has to conduct Puja in a Shiva Temple of his place twice in a day and should endeavor to learn and practice the agamas. Those in the age group of 8-12 will be assisted to join the Sivagama School and the parent will be given a sambavana of Rs 2000 per child per month. Sivagama students at the end of the fifth year can go back to their respective places to assist their parent. They may also perform puja in the surrounding villages of say 5 km radius thereby more Temples will be under Puja and attract the attention of the local people. Getting a life partner may not be that difficult as the income and status are assured and enhanced. May better sense prevail and we pray Lord Parameswara for the scheme to be received well among the Sivacharya community.

Innambur and Thiruppurambiyam Temples

Innambar (8) Innambar (6)

People normally visit shrines which they think are popular and important. Many times they skip places unknown to them even if they pass through them. Tour operators also plan to cover only those “important” places. The less known temples are thus left to the visits of few souls who consider all ancient shrines alike. If we take Kumbakonam – Thanjavur route for example, the often sought places are those in Kumbakonam town and Swamimalai. How many of us visit equally important Temples at Thiruvalanchuzhi and Nallur? Less said the better if we talk about those numerous temples en route which are left unnoticed. Not far away from Kumbakonam are the great Temples at Innambur and Thiruppurambiyam which can be easily covered within few hours if stationed at Kumbakonam.

Sekkizhar, the great Saivaite poet describes the route taken by Sundharamurthi Nayanar from Pazhayarai to Thiruppurambiyam by mentioning the places en route. After completing the pilgrimage to “Kongu Naadu’, Sundharar returned to Chola Naadu by reaching Karkudi, a place near Thiruchirappalli and sang Thevaram Hymns on The Lord. Then he went to Pazhaiyarai, one of the capital Cities of Chola Kingdom and worshipped at Aarai Metrali, located on the western side of Pazhayarai Town, very close to Patteeswaram and Thiruchathimutram. The Temple at Aarai Metrali is on an elevated platform, not looked after so well.

Then he proceeded to Innambar now known as Innamboor. The road from Patteeswaram joins Thanjavur road near Thiruvalanchuli at a distance of 3 km. The wonderful Temple at Thiuvalanchuli is about 1 km from the famous abode of Subramanya at Swamimalai. The road from Swamimalai to Kumbakonam has a diversion at a place called Puliyancheri from where one has to travel 2 km to reach Innambar and 3km thereafter to reach Thiruppurambiyam.

Innambar (11) Innambar (12)

Sundharamuthi Nayanar on his pilgrimage from Pazhayarai to Thiruppurambiyam would have surely visited the famous Temple at Thiruvalanchuzhi. Since the palm leaves of Thevaram Hymns could not be recovered fully, Sundharar’s Thiruvalanchuli Padhigam might have been lost among them. His next place of visit during this pilgrimage was Innambar and here also we are not fortunate to get his Hymns sung on Swayambunatha Swami of this place. However, he mentions about this place while proceeding to Thiruppurambiyam. The first verse of this Padhigam reflects the disappointment he faced when he did not receive enough attention from The Lord of these places. Hence he decided to console himself and proceeded to Thiruppurambiyam. This is how the Hymn goes:

“அங்கம் ஓதி ஓர் ஆறை மேற்றளி நின்றும் போந்து வந்து இன்னம்பர்த்               தங்கினோமையும் இன்னது என்றிலர் ஈசனார் எழு நெஞ்சமே                           கங்குல் ஏமங்கள் கொண்டு தேவர்கள் ஏத்தி வானவர் தாம் தொழும்                      பொங்கு மால் விடை ஏறி செல்வப் புறம்பயம் தொழப்போதுமே.”

The origin of the name Innambar is not clearly known. There are similar names that sound almost alike such as Ambar, Athambar ae there in Chola Kingdom. In this case, the prefix “ in “ distinguishes this place from Ambar which is near Poonthottam. Innambar is the 45th Temple on the northern bank of the river Cauvery. The east facing Temple has a five tier Rajagopuram at the entrance. On entering the outer prakaram, we find the shrine of the Goddess Sugantha Kunthalambikai facing south. The Temple’s garden (Nandhavanam) is also there in this prakaram. We enter the Main sannadhi by crossing the second entrance. Naattukottai Nagarathar community has renovated Swami sannathi and the inner prakaram. It presents a new look after the recent renovation and consecration. A huge Gajabrushta vimanam adores the sanctum.

After crossing the Mahamandapam we get the dharshan of Swayambunathaswami from ardhamandapam. The Lord in the form of Mahalingam is huge and the avudayar is also huge in size. It is definitely an unforgettable dharshan which one should not miss. In fact we can visit this place as many times as possible in our lifetime to have a glimpse of this Murthi. Since He is worshipped by Airavatha, the white Elephant of the Devas, He is also known as Airavatheeswara. The Temple pond opposite the Temple is called Airavatha Theertham. The Lord has taught Tamil Grammar to the great sage Agasthya in this place. The legend also says that the Lord appeared in human form and submitted the accounts of the Temple to the King. Hence He is called Aksharapureeswara in Sanskrit and Ezhuththariyum Peruman in Tamil. Appar’s Thevaram Hymn says that The Lord takes down the names of those who worship Him with flowers and also those who ignore Him. Sambadhar has also sung Hymns in praise of this Lord.

On the right of Swami sannadhi, there is yet another sannadhi for the Goddess. As this represents the married form of Shiva- Shakthi, the Goddess is known as Nithyakalyani. The devakoshtas are also absorbing and positioned at an elevated level. Nataraja in stone is small but crisp. The sthala vruksham  (tree) is said to be senbakam. Inscriptions of Chola and Vijayanagar period describe the donations made by the emperors in the name of the Temple. A chola inscription calls this place as “vadakarai Innambar naattu Innambar”

Thirupurambiyam (10) Thirupurambiyam (13)

Thiruppurambiyam  is located 3 km from Innambur and Sakshinathaswami Temple of this place is praised by all the four acharyas of Saiva sect. Incidentally, this was the battle field of the Cholas in 9th Century. It is said that Aditha I built this Temple in memory of his victory and called it as Adhitheswaram.

During the days of deluge when the whole world was about to be submerged in the ocean, Brahma worshipped Lord Ganapathi. He made an idol of Ganesa with crab shell and sea weeds. Lord Shiva had deputed Ganesa to save the world from extinction. This is the reason why Ganapathy of this Temple is called “Pralayam Kaatha Ganapathi” On Ganesh Chathurthi day, Abhishekam is done with honey for Ganapathi and it is a miracle that the honey thus offered never comes out of the Deity. Pralayam stood at the outskirts of this town and therefore the place attained the name “Purambiyam” The word “puram” (புறம்) in Tamil denotes this meaning. (ஊரின் புறத்தே வெள்ளம் நின்றதால் புறம்பியம் ஆயிற்று)

This village is surrounded by river Manniyar on the east, Kollidam on north and Cauvery on south. Sthalapuranam mentions this place as Kalyanapuram and Punnaagavanam. There is a separate shrine fo Sri Dhakshinamuthi near the entrance. Special mention is made about this deity by Sambandhar and Manickavasagar. This is also one of the famous places of Lord Dhakshinamurthi. The imposing 5 tier Rajagopuram faces east and the adjacent outer prakaram has an alankara mandapam that houses Guhambika sannidhi. The Goddess Ikshu rasabhashani ( karumbadu sollammai) faces south in a separate shrine in the same prakaram. The second prakaram has Saivacharya sannadhi and Ganapathi, Somaskandha, Subramanya, Lingas worshipped by Agathya, Pulasthya, Sanakathi rishis and Vishvamitra on Thirumaligaipaththi.

Many murthis in Deva koshtas have suffered extensive damage in the hands of anti-socials. The sculpture of Kalsamharamurthi has been nearly destroyed. It calls for proper protection to all monuments.

Sthala vruksham is “punnai”which is seen on the north-west side of the prakaram. On the south east of Mahamandapam of swami sannadhi is a shrine for Pralayam kaatha Ganapathi. The swayambu murthi is also worshipped by Varuna. Abishekam for this murthi is carried out only once in a year – on Vinayaka Chathurthi day.

Dwarapalakas stand at the entrance of Sri Sakshinatha swami. Vanni, well and Sivalinga of this place appeared in Madurai to give evidence for the marriage that took place in Thiruppurambiyam between a merchant of Madurai and a girl of Puhaar. Hence the Lord is known as Sakshinatha. As the sage Dhuvasa had cursed Haridwaja, a Magatha King became sick. He got rid of the disease when he reached Thiruppurambiyam and worshipped the Lord. Himavan,Drona,Viswamitra ,Sugeeva, to name a few, have worshipped the Lord to be blessed by Him.

Inscriptions dating from the period of Rajakesai varman to Kulothunga Chola are found in this temple.

Renovation work is on at this Temple in full swing. The involvement of Sivacharya of this Temple is tremendous. Knowing fully that it required huge sum to renovate the temple, he narrates the visitors about the importance of the temple and calls for their assistance. Many donors come forward to give building materials and some others involve themselves in repairing the vahanams, painting the walls and providing backup inverter. Plastering the outer wall is the only giant work remaining. With hopes pouring from all directions, the Sivacharya is optimistic to conduct the consecration ceremony at the earliest. We need people like him at all village temples so that the devotees are briefed properly and involved as well in maintaining/renovating the shrines.

Consecration at Peravur

Peravur is a small hamlet some 7 km from Aduthurai . It can also be reached by taking Kumbakonam- Karaikal road and divert from S.Pudur. The distance from S.Pudur must be around 4 km. We pass through the Temple at Thirukozhambam, sung in Thevaram. The Temple at Peravur is said to have been built by Adhitha Chola I and the Temple carries Chola inscriptions. Saint Appar has mentioned about this place in his Thevaram Hymns. Due to a very long period of neglect, the Temple had lost its Ambal Sannadhi. It had no compound wall. Puja was done only once in a day.

Yagasala Pujas started on  7th April by a team of Agama Pandits by drawing Holy water from Veera Cholan river , a tributary of Cauvery  followed by Ganapathi Homam and other Pujas as prescribed in Sivagamas. Go-Puja was done in front of the sanctum and a large gathering of local people witnessed the event. 4-kala Yagasala pujas were carried out which included dhampathi puja, vadu puja and kanya puja . The involvement of the locals in all these events was exceptional. Visesha sandhi by the sivacharyars was one of the main events of during these days. This was also done at two other places, namely Perumal Temple and Mariamman Temple.

Renovation work at Peravur

Peravoor (4)

Peravur is located some 5 km from Aduthurai, a mid point on Mayiladuthurai – Kumbakonam road. Adhitheswara Temple of Peravur dates back to the Chola Period. Since it had been neglected for a long time, it suffered extensive damage and the only remaining sannadhi was that of Adhitheswara. The shrine of His consort , Sri Gnanambikai is not there. The idol of the Goddess is therefore kept inside the sanctum.

This place is referred in Appar’s Thevaram Hymns and called as a “Thevara Vaipu Sthalam” Ardhra Foundation took interest in renovating and preserving this Heritage structure and held discussions with the locals and other philanthropists. The Main Sanctum was renovated with the help of well wishers and the only work left behind was the construction of Ambal Sannadhi.  AF came forward to construct the new shrine for the Goddess and the same was completed within a month.

The consecration of the Temple took place on 9th April,2014.

Construction of Subramanya Sannadhi at Keezh Korkai

Foundation work-Subramanya Sannadhi-Keezh KorkaiKorkai (8)

Subramanya Sannadhi built behind Siva shrine

The historic Temple at Keezha Korkai near Patteeswaram off Kumbakonam was once covered with wild growth of trees which penetrated through granite walls and vimanams. The renovation committee tried hard and found donors for renovating the shrine without altering the original glory. They numbered each stone of the Mahamandapam and dismantled the structure. The stones were replaced in their original places with the help of cranes after completely removing the giant roots of the plants. Since the sannadhis of Ganapathi and Subramanya were lost long back, the idols were kept in the Mahamandapam. A local person has come forward to construct a new shrine for Ganesa and Ardhra   Foundation has accepted to build a new sannadhi for Subramanya. The work was completed by March. Boomi Puja was held on 12 th Feb

The latest update is that the construction of Subramanya sannadhi is completed as scheduled. The Renovation committee expects the construction of compound wall to be started soon. Having completed all major work, the temple awaits clearance for consecration from HR&CE dept for over five years !
